If you’re too young to know who I’m speaking of, Google “The Little Rascals”.
Darla Hood was a little girl who was loved by many. Her greatest admirer was Alfalfa Switzer. He was constantly singing to her, mooning after her, and simple loving her in the way only a little boy can understand.
Hunter Yelton is a 6-year-old boy from Colorado who has a similar crush on a classmate. In the middle of a recent reading lesson, Hunter was so overcome with emotion that he kissed the hand of the girl he admires. He was branded a sexual harasser.
I’m not sure what’s more disturbing, that as a nation we are so sensitive that we cannot allow childish things to remain childish things or that we sexualize everything.
Originally, Hunter was expelled, he has since been allowed to return to school.
What saddens me the most is that it seems like common sense has left the building these days. I think a meeting with the parents and teacher would have handled the issue in a more sensible way. I rather doubt that he even understands the word “harassment” much less the word “sex”.
This labels a small child with the same offense as the former mayor of San Diego, Bob Filner. Really?! *Sigh*
Alfalfa was a character, I understand this. Yet he represents many little boys who vascillate between the “He-man Woman Haters Club” and “true love”. The kind of true love, apparently, only a 6-year-old truly understands.
