Let me explain…

‘The Dirty Dozen’ motion picture was the story of 12 convicted murderers who were trained by the US Army and led into a mission to assassinate the enemy.  The Dirty Dozen I want to tell you about today ARE the enemy.

I previously wrote about buying and eating organic foods.  Today I want to zero in on why certain organic produce items are even more important to purchase than others.

Produce, in general, is a high maintenance crop for farmers.  Between diseases and insects, there is a constant battle to harvest the maximum crop while minimizing loss. Some non-organic farmers use high amounts of chemicals in order to achieve that goal.

The Dirty Dozen are 12 produce items that commonly have the most chemical contamination.  These are the items of which you should ALWAYS purchase the organic version:

12 Most Contaminated

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Grapes (Imported)
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes

On the other hand, these 12 produce items are generally the LEAST contaminated:

12 Least Contaminated

  • Onions
  • Avocado
  • Sweet Corn (Frozen)
  • Pineapples
  • Mango
  • Asparagus
  • Sweet Peas (Frozen)
  • Kiwi Fruit
  • Bananas
  • Cabbage
  • Broccoli
  • Papaya

Be mindful of what you put into your body.  After all, you are a perishable item.  Live accordingly!
